Starter Homes

Our City has a rich history of attracting skilled men and women who provide professional, technical and critical support skills to enable our business community to grow and prosper.

More than ever, these employees – particularly those in the earlier portion of their careers – are looking for homes convenient to all parts of their work-life blend. With the many features of CityLine and the adjacent Spring Creek Nature Preserve, as well as recent work to redevelop our Main Street corridor, Richardson has much to offer to persons looking for an ideal community in which to live, work and play. Additionally, many new hires to our City are either preparing to raise or are raising a young family and see Richardson Independent School District campuses as providing the ideal place to educate their children.

This creates a unique challenge I believe can be addressed. Because of the solid reputation of our City and an equally solid economy, property values in Richardson have been consistently increasing. While this is good news for current owners looking to sell or to upgrade their homes, this creates a greater challenge for first-time home purchasers, many of whom may be carrying significant college debt. I will advocate for development of smart housing opportunities for these buyers.

My vision is for housing that supports individuals and young… or young-at-heart… families that want to be close to work, recreation, restaurants and schools. Homes that have the right amount of private, personal space that combines with neighborhood amenities at a value-point that matches their budget.

Two generations ago, starter homes were popular in the great migration to the suburbs. We have an opportunity to explore bringing a similar model to the City of Richardson. Not only does this support the interests of young people who look to become homeowners, but also the business community and those who own larger homes and are interested in having more people who will be ready for and seeking their next home in the coming years and would like to stay in the community in which they’re already invested.

Starter homes. Another way I will work on ways we can build on our City heritage, further strengthening and broadening opportunities throughout Richardson.
